Here nor There
by Marissa Rae Niederhauser
In ‘Here nor There’ a limited capacity audience is given the choice to observe the artist “Here”, dancing in the theater space live while casting sharp shadows on the wall behind her, or “there” in the back garden where the shadow play is projected from a live feed in an intimate open air cinema (inspired by the artist’s time living in Berlin where open air cinema is a common weekly activity). The audience can move between the two spaces as they like.
‘Here nor There’ is a duet with our own emptiness, using shadow, silhouette, historical theater illusions, minimalist tech and a bare studio space- we swim in the surreal timelessness of months spent in isolation during which our primary relationships were with our inner selves and the objects in space around us.
Marissa Rae Niederhauser makes body based work in dance, film, performance, photography and installation. Her work has been presented at On the Boards, Seattle Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and at Judson Memorial Church, NYC as well as at Lucy Guerrin Inc in Melbourne, AU and at ADA Studio, Projektraum LS43, K77 Studio, The Director’s Lounge and Lake Studios in Berlin. She is an award winning filmmaker with international screenings. She has a BFA in dance from Cornish College of the Arts and works as a Gyrotonic Instructor.
