PWNW is happy to host two events—a vocal workshop and a performance—by ex-Portlander artist Colin Self, now based in Berlin. Both events take place at Performance Works NW, 4625 SE 67th Ave, Portland, OR 97206
June 25: XOIR
XOIR is a non-utilitarian vocal workshop led by Colin Self focused on alternative modalities of group singing. Rooted in somatic research, experimentation and play, the goal of XOIR is to foster a generative environment for individuals to connect with voice and vocality on an individual and collective level. For the session at PWNW, we will move through a series of vocal exercises and prompts for collectively-authored improvisations, meditations, and games.
An important distinguishing factor about XOIR sessions are that they require no prior singing experience to participate. Any previous experiences with listening or engaging experimentally in a musical or studio practice is welcomed, but the only prerequisite is curiosity and willingness.. There is no audience or recording during XOIR sessions and no gendered or quantified roles of soprano/tenor/alto/bass. XOIR is open to anyone interested in exploring their voice as a tool for learning or re-posturing a new relationship to listening and singing. XOIR works with a logic of being “autonomous together” pointing toward ancient and futuristic logics of ungovernable modalities of community organizing.

riddlecraft rhapsody
An intermezzo and puppet performance by Colin Self; riddlecraft rhapsody is a prologue to Colin’s forthcoming record, respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis. An anonymous spirit gallops across space-time at the advent of an interdimensional journey of lost and found– the rhapsody moves through ten sections: Place, Action, Yearnings, Rescue, Triumph, Homage, Anxieties, Repose, Abduction, and Cupid.
