Collaboration between choreographer Linda Austin & sound and video artist Seth Nehil

Performers: Linda Austin, Anne Furfey, Bonnie Green, Rebecca Harrison, Kaj-anne Pepper, and Lucy Yim

This evening-length theatrical performance, based on a “forgetting” of Seijun Suzuki’s 1967 cult classic movie Koroshi no Rakuin (Branded to Kill), will incorporate dance movement, projected image, live and recorded sound. Austin’s distinctive choreography is matched with Nehil’s evocative musique concrete, creating a place where the grotesque and the whimsical slide into each other, overlap and become confused.

The conceptual thread that ties these artists together is their investigation of the boundaries of performance space. They are intrepid in their improvisation practice(s) of invitation to and feedback from their audiences. Their curiosity is fueled by imagination, and illuminated in the moment-to-moment transformation of performance.

Rebecca Davis makes movement and objects. She founded and curated the Dance Forum series at the Brooklyn Museum from 2001-2006. Davis is the Director of Education and Outreach at Trisha Brown Dance Company, where she has worked since 2002.

NORU KA SORU KA
Multicultural Improvised Music and Dance Collaboration

Noru Ka Soru Ka’s freely improvised work draws on jazz, New Music, electronic, folk, and classical music, as well as the dance and theater traditions of both the East and West. The ensemble is comprised of percussionist Georg Hofmann (Switzerland), violinist Richard Carr (New York), guitar/electronicist Mike Nord (Oregon) and dancers Makoto Matsushima and Mao Arata (Japan).

Appropriate to their work as improvisers, Noru Ka Soru Ka formed as the result of a chance 2006 encounter in Japan where Leo Records recording artists Carr Nord Hofmann were performing. In addition to the Nuru Ka Soru Ka project, the eclectic trio has also performed in the US, Europe, and Mexico. Downbeatmagazine noted that their work “transcends established idioms of Jazz, folk, or classical music.” Matsushima and Arata have performed across the globe on numerous tours and residencies, both as independent artists and as members of the renowned Japanese dance company Pappa Tarahumara. In reviewing a New York performance at BAM, the Village Voice described Matsushima as “nimble and powerfully expressive” and Arata as “uncannily beautiful; she can drop suddenly as if folding into soft earth.”
